St Andrews Strings
St Andrews Strings is St Andrews' only string orchestra, performing music from a large variety of genres. Formed in 2017, the group is the Music Society's youngest ensemble.
Strings consists of around 16 - 20 auditioned string players (roughly 9 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos and a double bass), their small size enabling them to perform unconducted. Repertoire ranges from Classical and Romantic works to modern pieces, including film music.
The ensemble rehearses weekly on a Thursday from 5 - 7pm, typically performing once a semester in concerts alongside the University of St Andrews Chamber Choir.
An audition for St Andrews Strings is required and consists of a prepared piece and some sight-reading. These take place at the start of Semester 1 and a link to sign-up will be published here at the beginning of September.
The group will be available to answer questions about this process and their rehearsals at this year's Music Fayre. If interested after Orientation Week, please contact the managers directly via email.
